Tribute to Dollar Brand Duo

Maestro piano player John Reeves and renowned saxophonist Martha Baartz are collaborating to present the music of South African Jazz pianist, Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim). This music is uplifting and happy. It’s full of spirit, Joy, and virtuosity. With just the baby grand piano, Saxophones and flute, the pair will have space and flexibility to weave the beautiful music of Dollar Brand to diverse and transcendent places, taking the audience along for the ride. This music is a true celebration of life and community.

John Reeves is a Jazz Pianist and Piano Accordionist. Trained at the Royal College of Music in London in classical piano and since pursued a career in Jazz. He has a special interest in the Music of Africa. After attending a course in Ghana West Africa on a sector development grant in 2007 he’s played with many African musicians living in Brisbane as well as sharing this interest with his fellow local jazz musicians, crossing cultures to explore the roots of jazz in our modern global village.

Martha Baartz has performed extensively Nationally and Internationally, including The world famous Glastonbury Festival and The Edinburgh Festival. Martha is also a composer, having recorded three successful albums with another to be released this year, her music is often played on Radio National, Jazz Track.
She has performed with Australian Jazz greats such as Sandy Evans, Bob Sedergreen (2008 Don Banks award winner) Andrea Keller (Aria winner) and Renee Geyer. She has also played with international jazz musicians Phil Woods and David Liebman at Liebman’s Master Class for outstanding saxophone players.

She expresses a tremendous depth of talent for writing, demonstrated over the years leading various successful bands.
