Flutterbies Cottage Cafe is a gorgeous place to stop and enjoy coffee, lunch or some afternoon tea. There’s an elegant high tea room and lush and shady gardens hidden out the back. We highly recommend the Flutterbies’ cake; it’s just a cupcake but filled with jam, piled high with cream, sprinkled with icing sugar, a wonderful sweet treat. Looking for brekkie? Try the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. For something really special book a high tea, an experience of indulgence, glamour and exquisiteness. On arrival, you’ll receive a sparking rose bliss champagne cocktail filled with rose flavoured fairy floss, rose syrup and petals. Next, you are served a range of delicacies, including cucumber sandwiches, scones with vanilla and jam, Craquelure profiterole with crème patisserie, dark chocolate & liqueur truffle, served on three-tiered platters. All handcrafted fresh that day by the exquisite pastry chefs.

Half a dozen different gin cocktails, and not the cheap stuff, Ink gin craft made in Tumbulgum. I recommend a double on ice, never has gin tasted so good. What about champagne with edible gold round the rim? There’s a host of other cocktails available too, all of them outstanding. Find it within the Flutterbies grounds.

Double or Nothing coffee will let you experience the rare, high-grade blends that are imported from Columbia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Panama, Costa Rica and Kenya, all locally roasted and mixed. Tasting notes range from tropical fruit concoctions to chocolate and caramel sensations. This is the best coffee for at least 80km in all directions, without the hype and the superficiality of a typical high-end coffee shop. Not surprisingly it was the winner of The Gold Coast Bulletin’s ‘Best Coffee on the Gold Coast’ award.

‘Coffee sour’ is the result of a collaboration between Black Hops Beer and Double or Nothing coffee roasters. This is an alcoholic drink with plenty of caffeine too! It’s the combination of brewing beer sour with cold brew coffee to create something utterly unique.

The Bakehouse of Tyalgum bakes an array of wholesome, organic breads and scrumptious French pastries. One of their most well-known breads is the sourdough made from stone ground, unbleached organic flour. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, leaving you with a satisfied belly. What leaves you beyond satisfaction is the array of pastries. The pastry chefs were taught by an authentic French pastry master. We recommend the chocolate and almond croissants that are perfectly flaky and crunchy at the bite; fruit Danishes ranging from pear, apricot, peach and apple that melt in the mouth; and chocolate éclairs that are at least four times better than any you’ve ever had. All made fresh every morning, from the pastry oven to your plate.

The pizzas are wonderful – handmade bases and great varieties of toppings to choose from. We recommend the Zuca – pumpkin, goat’s cheese, reduced balsamic sauce and rosemary. Flutterbucks upholds the ‘hip’ standard for Tyalgum. Rustic wooden bench seats, studded leather couches, patterned tiles and a cosy fireplace! By day, this is the boutique supplying the local Double Or Nothing coffee. By night, this becomes the gathering place for the village with fresh pizza, live music and locally crafted beers.

Tyalgum Gelato is a godsend for ice-cream lovers. Made by an authentic Italian, Valentino studied gelato making in Italy and brings some of the finest gelato in at least NSW, if not Australia. Flavour combinations from creamy banana with nutella, caramel mou & shredded coconut, dragon fruit, passion fruit, Ferrero Rocher, Davidson plum, pannacotta & crushed meringues, pure pistachio and raspberry sorbet.

Substitute a meal – have a double scoop in a cone!

While a general store is not normally a place that would get a mention in a foodie’s column our general store does deserve a mention. Not because they make anything outstanding for dedicated foodies, but because the range on offer includes a lot of handmade, organic and local items. The fridge doesn’t just have a million cans of sugar, there’s kombucha, kefir, organic cola. The freezer has magnum ice-creams but also has raw fruit bars. There’s also a range of interesting handcrafted chocolates, biscuits and nut bars. Oh, and they do make a great chicken and salad roll if that’s all your after. Even the fruit and veg come from someone’s garden in the village and surrounds. While you’re there hire one of the electric bicycles, pack a picnic and go for a ride!
